Calming the Storm

Calming the Storm is the start of our full DBT for Parents program for parent’s of child and young adults who are struggling with ongoing emotional, and behavioral regulation issues with their child resulting in unmanaged mental health challenges. Our 12 month program helps those parents who need critical support to help overcome challenging situations that can rise to crisis, and family destroying patterns. This program will help parents begin to calm the storm in home with learning how to respond to challenging behaviors through parent support, skills, without judgement and a whole lot of compassion.

Parent’s who may benefit from this program.

If your child or family has a child who:

  • Recently was hospitalized due to mental health concerns

  • Physical Aggression

  • Chronic school refusal

  • Suicidal threats or attempts

  • Verbal aggression or threats of violence

  • Anxiety Avoidance

  • Needing more care then current level of treatment

  • Explosive and reactive

  • Many accommodations are needed for your child to function in life, attend school or engaging.

  • Struggles with self harm

  • Ongoing Crisis

  • Refuses Treatment

  • High Risk Drug Usage

  • Low Life Engagement

  • Requires daily high levels of parent involvement to engage in life.

  • Depressed, unmotivated and disengaged in life

  • Parent is feeling ongoing exhaustion and fatigue

  • Your child may have been recommended: DBT therapy, OCD Treatment, Anxiety program, Inpatient hospitalization, a residential program or an intensive outpatient program.

What is Calming the Storm?

Calming the Storm is designed to support parents in restoring stability within the home by enhancing their responses to their child's or young adult's mental health challenges. We have developed a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Parents model, which encompasses a comprehensive 12-month program featuring weekly parent coaching sessions and monthly DBT for parents skill group meetings. Our program is for parents with a child of any age.

Parents typically enter Calming the Storm due to their child's persistent stage one behavioral issues at home. Throughout the program, you will collaborate with your therapist to swiftly identify key areas that require attention to foster greater stability and mitigate crises.

During the initial four months of Calming the Storm, you will participate in monthly DBT for parents skill group sessions to acquire essential skills while continuing with ongoing parent coaching. The program emphasizes core components necessary for cultivating and supporting wise-minded parenting during this critical period. Upon completion of Calming the Storm, you will transition into the Thrive program, which focuses on additional key areas beyond stability. What you will learn while in Calming the storm:

Parent Wisemind: The core to moving in an effective direction with your family is learning how to parent from a value centered regulated place as a parent. You will learn the necessary skills needed to move your family up towards improve wellness, and feeling more effective as a parent.

Calming the storm: We start with identifying the most significate problematic behaviors in the home. We explore how you are managing and responding to these, along with helping you to begin to learn and apply skills to reducing the frequency and the intensity of these behaviors. In this module we will slow down and look at the impact not only on your child, but as well as you as a parent. We will help you begin to build parent responses that connect to your wise mind values, aim at long term stability and help you get out of crisis management mode. Lastly we will begin to help you take your own emotions and experience seriously.
