Managing and Responding to Difficult Behaviors
The Be Center is presenting our new workshop Parent Coaching: Managing and Responding to Difficult Behaviors. This 5-week advanced course is aimed at helping parents who are struggling with effectively responding to their child’s/adolecent/young adult difficult behaviors. This program focuses on two core components of our parent coaching program: AIM and CONNECT.
Aim focuses on skills to help parents problem solve, create behavior plans and focus on changing problematic behaviors. This set of skills emphasize change strategies grounded in behavioral principles to help parents understand and choose effective ways of responding to their child’s behaviors.
Connect focuses on skills to help parents attend to their relationship with their child, including strategies to communicate, understand and validate effectively. This set of skills emphasize strategies to help parents re-connect and improve their relationship with their child.
Together, these skills offer parents a balanced approach to effectively manage and respond to their child’s behaviors. The program is based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) principles and taught by experienced DBT clinicians.

Validation Bootcamp
Validation is the acknowledgement of another human's experience. When we feel heard and understood it can help us connect and move forward in difficult situations. Validation is one of the core skills for getting through conflict, helping a loved one through painful moments, building relationships, and problem solving. In this 2-part, intensive workshop parents will take an in depth look of validation skills and how to validate in even the most challenging situations. During the workshop, parents will:
Learn validation skills and practice validation in a variety of situations, including de-escalating conflict and increasing engagement when your child “shuts down”.
Identify and problem solve links on the parent's own chain that may be making validation difficult or ineffective.
Identify common pitfalls and situations where families may be inadvertently invalidating, despite their attempts to be helpful.
Identify targets of validation and learn how to respond when your child is not communicating effectively.
Differentiate validation of valid experiences vs. invalid, problematic behaviors
Learn how to respond when your child feels invalidated, even if you believe you are being validating.
The Validation Bootcamp is recommended for parents who have completed our Parent Coaching Foundational Workshop, or parents who have learned DBT skills and are looking to improve their skills.
The workshop is designed to be hands on and experiential, with heavy emphasis on practice and role plays. Parents should ensure they have a private space for full participation.

Identify and problem solve links in parent’s own chains that can facilitate change
Manage your own distress and cope with your child’s distress during transitions
